The job

What a life insurance sales agent does all day

  • CompareReview their income, debts, health and budget, then check which carriers would approve them and at what price.
  • ApplyComplete the application together and submit it. Some policies approve in minutes and others take a few weeks.
  • Follow upStay in touch once the policy is in force and when their life changes, such as a new home or a new child.

Before you apply

The parts most job posts leave out

You are paid when policies issue

Commission arrives after a carrier approves the application and the first premium is collected. There is no pay for hours worked or calls made.

Lapses can cost you

If a client stops paying early, the carrier can take back the commission it advanced. This is called a chargeback, and the calculator below includes it.

You need a state license

You cannot sell life insurance without one. Most people finish the course and exam in a few weeks, and costs vary by state.

Early weeks are slow

You will spend time on licensing, training and learning carrier rules before your first commission check. Plan your finances around that.

Pay

Run the math on commission

Change the numbers to match your contract and your pace. This is arithmetic on the inputs you enter. It does not predict what you will earn.

Licensing

How to get a life insurance license

Rules differ by state, so check your state department of insurance for exact requirements. The usual path looks like this.

  1. Step 1

    Check your state's requirements

Your state insurance department lists the license types, required hours of education, and fees.

  2. Step 2

    Complete pre-licensing education

Many states require a course in life insurance, and some do not. Courses are usually available online.

  3. Step 3

    Pass the state exam

Schedule it with the testing provider your state uses, and bring the required ID.

  4. Step 4

Submit your application and background check

Most states ask for fingerprints and a criminal background check, which can add time.

  5. Step 5

    Get appointed with carriers

You need a contract with each insurance company before you can submit its applications.

Questions

Common questions about sales jobs here

Do I need experience to get a life insurance sales job?

No. Many agents start with no insurance or sales background. You do need a state life insurance license, and we point you to the course and exam before you take your first call.

How do I get a life insurance license?

Complete your state's pre-licensing education if it requires it, pass the state exam, submit your application and background check, then get appointed with carriers. Requirements and fees differ by state, so confirm them with your state department of insurance.

Is this a commission-only job?

Yes. Agents are independent contractors paid by commission on policies that issue. There is no salary or hourly pay, and income is not guaranteed.

Can I work remotely as a final expense or life insurance agent?

Yes. The work is done by phone and video, so you can work from home. You can only sell in states where you hold a license.

How long until I earn my first commission?

It depends on how fast you finish licensing, how many conversations you have, and how long carriers take to approve and issue each policy. Plan your finances for several slow weeks before the first check.

What is a chargeback?

If a policyholder cancels or stops paying within the carrier's early period, the carrier can recover part or all of the commission it advanced. Our calculator includes a lapse rate so you can see the effect.

What kinds of insurance would I sell?

Whole life (including final expense), term life (including mortgage protection) and indexed universal life, depending on the carriers you are appointed with and your state license.

How much do life insurance agents make?

It varies widely. Agents are paid commission only, so income depends on the leads you work, your close rate, the products you sell and how many policies stay in force. Use the calculator on this page with your own numbers, and treat any single income figure with caution.

Is selling life insurance a good career for beginners?

It can be if you are comfortable with phone work, follow-up and a commission-only structure. Entry barriers are low, but results come from consistent effort and getting licensed.

What is the difference between a final expense agent and a mortgage protection agent?

Final expense agents mostly work with older adults on smaller whole life policies for end-of-life costs. Mortgage protection agents mostly work with homeowners on coverage tied to a home loan. Both are life insurance sales roles.

Do I need to be a captive agent or an independent agent?

Independent agents can offer policies from several carriers, which lets you shop for the best fit. Captive agents sell for one company. The roles on this page are independent contractor positions.

Can I do this part time?

Many people start part time while they finish licensing. Results depend on the hours you put in, and leads need quick follow-up.
